The Archetype of the Unequal or Hostile Brothers
September 2026 - July 2027

From September 2026 to July 2027 the C. G. Club London will dedicate its Thursday lectures (in person and online) to the exploration of the archetype of the unequal or hostile brothers. We will trace this motif, which emerged in the Freud / Jung correspondence before their split, through Jung's Red Book and The Black Books. We will look at how Jung later develops the theme in alchemy, where he found that the Christian father/son set-up was not compensated with a mother/daughter configuration, but with another (hostile) son. We will have lectures on how the hostile brothers dynamic is treated in Shakespeare and in Goethe's Faust, the way the motif manifests in politics, and the ethical problems it sets. The theme will be also explored from an astrological and from a musical perspective. 

Apart from monthly lectures the Club will offer an online Hostile Brothers Reading Group, as well as the telling of the Grimm's Fairy Tale The Two Brothers (Essex Church, London, 5th of November 2026).

2025 / 26 Year in Focus

From September 2025 to July 2026 the C. G. Club London dedicated its Thursday lectures (in person and online) to different aspects of C. G. Jung's VII Sermons to the Dead, the only part of The Red Book which was published during Jung's lifetime.

Thanks to the editor of The Red Book, Sonu Shamdasani, London has become a centre of Red Book expertise. It is only fitting that the C. G. Jung Club London should benefit from this interest in our analytic community.

Apart from monthly lectures the Club will offer an online VII Sermons reading group, as well as a dramatic reading of the text, accompanied by live music (Essex Church, London, 13th  of November 2025).
